Microsoft unveils $40 Windows 8 Upgrade

Windows fans waiting anxiously for the latest version of the operating system to come out are eager to find out as many details as possible about Windows 8. No wonder why we’re kind of the same here. One of the things that might keep your mind busy is related to how the upgrade process will actually work. Well, Microsoft has sent to some of its partner details regarding this matter. So, let’s have a look and see what they’re about.

It’s no longer news that users who have or will have purchased Windows 7 devices between June 2, 2012, and January 31, 2013, will have the possibility to get Windows 8 Pro for only $14,99. Now, if you haven’t bought such a device and you don’t intend to do that and you want to upgrade to the consumer version of the OS without losing your files, settings, applications, you’ll have to upgrade from Windows 7 Home Basic, Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows 7 Starter.

If you’re interested in getting Windows 8 Pro and in keeping all of your files, apps, and settings, you’ll need Windows 7 Professional or Windows 7 Ultimate besides the versions mentioned above.

Those aiming at Windows 8 Enterprise upgrade should know that Windows 7 Enterprise and Windows 7 Professional are needed in order for all their files, settings and apps to be kept when upgrading and those who’re still on Windows Vista (without SP1 installed) will be able to upgrade to Windows 8 keeping only their personal files.

If you’re upgrading from Windows Vista with SP1 installed, you’ll be able to maintain your personal data and system settings. You’ll need Service Pack 3 to upgrade from Windows XP. Only your personal data will be maintained, though. Moreover, users won’t be able to perform a cross-language upgrade without losing their apps, settings and files regardless of the Windows version they’re currently running. Details regarding the price for the upgrade options haven’t been announced yet.
